Notable Storylines
Bueckers Three-Peats as WNBA Rookie of the Month … Paige Bueckers was named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for the third consecutive month. Bueckers became the 10th player in WNBA history and first in Wings franchise history to earn the distinction three times. Bueckers led all rookies in scoring and assists in the month of August, punctuated by setting the single-game rookie scoring record. The 6-0 guard averaged 20.3 points and 5.0 assists over 10 games in August, not only leading all first-year players in scoring but listing fourth among all WNBA players. She shot 49.7 percent from the field and 93.6 percent from the free-throw line while adding 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals. The month was highlighted by Bueckers’ record-setting performance at the Los Angeles Sparks on Aug. 20. She scored 44 points to break the WNBA single-game rookie scoring record.
Wings Roster Update … With Luisa Geiselsöder missing the remainder of the season, the Wings signed 6-3 rookie forward Ajae Petty to a seven-day hardship contract. Additionally, Dallas signed guard Serena Sundell to a second seven-day hardship contract. Should Petty get into Thursday’s game, the Wings will match the WNBA record for most players to have played on a team in a single season (21 – originally set by the 20023 Phoenix Mercury). Injury woes are a theme for Dallas this season with Geiselsöder joining Ty Harris, II Quinerly and Li Yueru with season-ending injuries, while Haley Jones and Arike Ogunbowale also remain sidelined.
Bueckers Approaching Milestone … Paige Bueckers is eight points away from taking over the top spot on the Wings franchise rookie scoring list. Over 33 games played, Bueckers has totaled 623 points. Teammate Arike Ogunbowale is the current franchise record holder for points in a rookie campaign, totaling 630 over 33 games in 2019. Bueckers has scored in double figures in 32 of 33 games and eclipsed the 20-point mark on 15 occasions – seventh most in WNBA history for a rookie.
Amazing Amy … The Dallas Wings signed Amy Okonkwo to a seven-day hardship contract on Aug. 21. In five games with the Wings, she has averaged 11.4 points and 3.0 rebounds while shooting over 52 percent from the field. Okonkwo, who went to school at nearby TCU and served as an intern for the Dallas Wings in 2018, has the second-highest scoring average among undrafted first-year players in league history and one of just three to average double figures. She was signed to a second seven-day contract on Friday prior to the Atlanta Dream game.
