Notable Storylines
Amazing Amy … The Dallas Wings signed Amy Okonkwo to a seven-day hardship contract on Aug. 21. In two games with the Wings, she has averaged 10.0 points and 2.0 rebounds while shooting over 61 percent from the field. Okonkwo is just the fifth undrafted player in WNBA history and first since 2000 to average 10+ points and shoot 60+% from the field over her first two career games. Okonkwo scored eight points and shot 3-5 from the field in her WNBA debut on Aug. 22 against the Seattle Storm, before adding 12 points on 5-8 shooting, three rebounds and two assists against the Golden State Valkyries on Aug. 24.
Wings Sign Sundell … With the season-ending injury to JJ Quinerly, the Wings signed guard Serena Sundell to a seven-day hardship contract. Sundell was selected 26th overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm. The 6-2 guard is Kansas State’s all-time assists leader, earning First Team All-Big 12 honors twice over her four-year career, along with AP and WBCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades during her senior season in 2024-25. The Missouri native averaged 14.1 points and 7.3 assists while shooting over 50 percent from the field during her final season with the Wildcats. Sundell was waived by Seattle just prior to the start of the regular season. She most recently played for the 2025 USA 3×3 Women’s Nations League Team this past July in Chile.
Another Historic Night For Bueckers … Paige Bueckers scored a WNBA rookie record 44 points on Wednesday night at the Los Angeles Sparks, shooting 17-21 from the field, 4-4 from three and 6-6 from the free-throw line. Among the notables from that performance:
- Set the WNBA rookie scoring record, recording the most points by a rookie in a single game in league history (44).
- The WNBA first-year player record of 44 was set by Cynthia Cooper in the first season of the WNBA (1997), when all players were ‘first year’; the true rookie record was held by Candace Parker who scored 40 points in 2008
- Broke the record for most points in a game by a rookie in franchise history.
- Became the first player in league history to score 40+ points while shooting at least 80% from the field.
- Recorded the most points in a game by a player this season.
- Tied the franchise record for most field goals made in a game (17).
- Moved to No. 1 in franchise history for most double-digit scoring games in a rookie season (29).
- Tied Arike Ogunbowale for No. 2 in franchise history for most 35+ point games in a rookie season (2).
- Set career-highs in both points and field goals made.
