Wings Go Up Against the Sun

ARLINGTON, TX – The Dallas Wings will have an afternoon showdown today as they go up against the Connecticut Sun before the all-star break. This afternoon’s game is set for 3 p.m. and can be seen on Fox Sports Southwest Plus.

AGAINST THE EAST

The Wings are matching up well when it comes to Eastern Conference foes. Overall the team is 8-2 and 5-0 at home. The Wings currently own the series against Indiana and Atlanta with 2-0 records. The team’s largest margin of victory over east conference teams is 23, which occurred against Atlanta on May 20 and recently Chicago on July 5. Both wins took place on the Wings home court, with the team scoring 100-plus points to record season highs. The Wings grabbed the series against New York with a 104-87 home victory behind Liz Cambage’s record-breaking performance. The Wings will play game four of an 11-game stretch against the east when they take on the Sun.

AGAINST THE SUN

This afternoon’s matchup marks the first time between the Wings and Sun for the 2018 regular season. Last year, the Wings took the season series 2-1. In their final meeting for the 2017 season, Skylar Diggins-Smith led the way with 19 points to solidify the series for the year.

BUCKETS ON BUCKETS

The Wings are currently first in the WNBA in scoring, averaging 88.5 points per game.  The Wings highest scoring game came against the Chicago Sky, when the team scored 108 points. They have scored at least 100 points in five total contests this season, the first two coming against the Atlanta Dream and the Los Angeles Sparks in a blowout victory that saw 10 different players score for the Wings. The most recent 100-point game came in a 104-87 win over the New York Liberty. The five 100-point games are a franchise record for most 100-point games in a single season. In the 24 games played, the Wings have recorded 70-plus points in 23 out of 24 games, keeping opponents to an 82.9 point per game average. Against the Sky, the Wings recorded a season-high 62 points in the paint. Cambage and Diggins-Smith lead the Wings, averaging 22.0 and 18.5 points per game respectively. Their 40.5 points per game make them the second-highest scoring duo in the league. Against the Sky, the Wings scored a season-high 108 points on 57 percent from the field. Cambage scored 37 points, while Diggins-Smith recorded her 53rd 20-point game of her career. Against the Liberty, Diggins-Smith broke Deanna Nolan’s franchise records for most 20-point and most 30-point games when she recorded 32 points on the road. Against the Liberty, Cambage broke the WNBA record for most points in a single game with 53 points. Against the Sky on July 20, the Wings set a season high with six players scoring in double figures.

WHERE WE STAND

The Wings are currently tied for fourth  in the WNBA standings with an 14-10 record, including 9-3 at home. Since moving to Dallas, the Wings have never finished above seventh in the final standings. In their inaugural season, the Wings finished 11th in the league before improving to seventh in the 2017 season. The Wings are looking to record their first winning season since moving to the DFW area. The Wings are currently in line to make the playoffs for the second straight season.

ALL-STAR SELECTIONS

The WNBA revealed the list of 22 All-Stars for the Verizon WNBA All-Star 2018. Skylar Diggins-Smith and Liz Cambage garnered selections. This year’s all-star team captains are Washington Mystics Delle Donne and Los Angeles Sparks Candace Parker. Each captain will select their respective teams from the pool of remaining All-Stars to form two 11-player rosters.  Delle Donne will make the first pick and Parker will have the second pick.  The two captains will then alternate picks until all players have been selected. It will be Diggins-Smith’s fourth All-Star appearance, tying Cheryl Ford and Deanna Nolan for most appearances in franchise history. She is eighth in the league in scoring, averaging 19.0 points per game and third in the league in assists with 6.5 assists per contest. Cambage will be making her second appearance and first since the 2011 season. She is currently second in the league in scoring and rebounding, averaging 21.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
