Wings Set To Take On Sparks On Camp Day
The Dallas Wings return to College Park Center Wednesday to take on the Los Angeles Sparks at noon.
Dallas comes home after a difficult contest against the New York Liberty on Sunday. Dallas came out fast in the game and led 51-45 at half. An explosive third quarter by the Liberty, which saw them score 34 points, was ultimately the difference in the game and Dallas fell 102-93.
The Wings enter the game fifth in the standings at 5-4, with the Sparks just behind them at 4-4. Wednesday marks their first battle of 2023. The two teams split the season series last season.
Dallas is led by the two-headed monster of Satou Sabally and Arike Ogunbowale. Sabally was named the Western Conference Player of the Week this past week and has posted six straight double doubles. As of June 13, Sabally sits tied for first in the WNBA in rebounding and sixth in scoring.
“In my mind, I haven’t achieved anything yet,” said Sabally on Tuesday. “I’m not complacent because we’re not at the end of the season. We have so many more games to go and grow, that I think if we’re already showing these results now, it can only mean it will be better one or two months ahead.”
Ogunbowale and Sabally sit fourth and sixth in the league respectively in scoring, sandwiching Nneka Ogwumike of the Sparks. Ogwumike is averaging 21.3 points per game on the season, on an impressive 58.1% shooting. Lexie Brown (14.4 points per game) and Chiney Ogwumike (12.8 points per game) trail the elder Ogwumike to lead the Sparks.
Wednesday’s game figures to be high scoring. Dallas currently sits second in points per game, while the Sparks are fourth. Likewise, both teams do an outstanding job of eliminating mistakes. Dallas averages the least turnovers in the league, trailed closely by the Sparks who average the second least.
The battle to watch in this game will be rebounding. While Dallas leads the league in both total rebounding and offensive rebounding, the Sparks come in 11th in total rebounding and 11th in defensive rebounding.
Meanwhile for Dallas, Head Coach Latricia Trammell said Tuesday that defensive transition will be important, along with protecting the rim.
“Most of their points come in the paint,” said Trammell. “So we’ve got to do a great job of keeping the ball out of the paint and allowing players to get to their sweet spots. We got to disrupt.”
The game is Dallas’ annual Camp Day and the Wings are expecting more than 3,000 children to attend the game from local summer camps. It figures to be a loud, passionate crowd.
“We like to say that if you can see it, you can be it,” said Trammell on the young crowd. “I probably would guarantee that some of our players were those players sitting in in the stands at one point, wanting to play professional basketball and so it is an amazing experience.”
“Scream really loud,” said Sabally when asked about any advice for the campers. “I think any child that comes to a WNBA game can see greatness and can see how far you can even come yourself.”
The game also marks the first time for Trammell to compete against her former team. Trammell spent four seasons as an assistant for the Sparks before taking over with the Wings.
“LA was great for me the last four seasons,” said Trammell. “I appreciate everything that they’ve done for me and I appreciate that opportunity. But again, we’re at home, every game is big when you’re trying to reach some of the expectations and goals that you have.”
The game Wednesday will be broadcast live on Bally Sports Southwest. Following the game Wednesday, Dallas takes on the Seattle Storm on Saturday at College Park Center.
