Wings Look to Clinch Playoff Spot Tonight Against Aces

ARLINGTON, TX – The Dallas Wings are one win from entering the 2018 WNBA playoffs, as they host their final home game of the regular season. Tonight’s matchup places the Wings in a must win battle against the Aces to advance on to the WNBA playoffs. Currently both teams hold a 14-18 record, with the Wings leading the 2018 campaign, 2-0. With a win, the Wings will advance to postseason play for the second consecutive season since moving the Dallas-Fort Worth area and 11th overall in franchise history.

WHERE WE STAND
The Wings are currently eighth in the WNBA standings with an 14-18 record, including 9-7 at home. Since moving to Dallas, the Wings have never finished above seventh in the final standings. In their inaugural season, the Wings finished 11th in the league before improving to seventh in the 2017 season. The Wings are currently in line to make the playoffs for the second straight season. With a win over Las Vegas, the Wings will clinch their second straight playoff birth.

Cambage and Diggins-Smith lead all scorers, averaging 22.8 and 18.0 points per game respectively. In the Wings last home win, they scored 90 points against the Mystics. Liz Cambage led the Wings scoring 53 points and breaking both the franchise record and WNBA record for most points scored in a single game against the Liberty on July 17. She also tied the WNBA record with 17 made field goals.

The Wings are 6-8 against the Western Conference so far this season, including 4-3 at home. With their most recent victory over the Sparks, the Wings took the season series 2-1. The Wings currently own the series against Las Vegas with a 2-0 record. The team’s largest margin of victory over western conference teams is 29, when the Wings beat the Sparks 101-72 at home. The Wings were led by the bench, which scored 39 points in the victory. They tied that margin of victory with a 101-72 blowout win over the Phoenix Mercury on July 10. The Wings will finish their season with two straight Western Conference opponents, first at home against the Aces with a playoff spot on the line and then in Seattle for the final regular season game of the season.

AGAINST THE ACES
Tonight’s matchup will mark the final time the two teams will meet for the 2018 season, with the Wings picking up victories in both previous matchups this season. In the first matchup of 2018, the Wings beat the Aces 77-67 behind Liz Cambage’s 28 points and career-high 18 rebounds. Skylar Diggins-Smith also added 20 points in the victory. The Wings picked up a victory in the second contest of the season as well, defeating the Aces 97-91 behind Skylar Diggins-Smith’s 29 points and eight assists.

With a win tonight, the Wings will punch their ticket into the WNBA playoff for the second consecutive season. Currently the Wings are tied with tonight’s opponent, the Las Vegas Aces with a 14-18 record. Should the Wings advance they will look to stay in the west coast and possibly face the Los Angeles Sparks or Phoenix Mercury following their final game of the 2018 season at Seattle.
