By Kayte Ledbetter
The Dallas Wings (14-11) fell, 104-91, to the Las Vegas Aces (23-2) at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon.
Teaira McCowan earned her sixth double-double of the season with 25 points and 14 rebounds, eight of which were offensive rebounds. She has eight career games with eight or more offensive rebounds, which is third most in league history, third only to Yolanda Griffith (18) and Rebekkah Brunson (13). Of the eight most recent occurrences in the WNBA that a player has had eight or more offensive rebounds, six instances have been recorded by McCowan.
Natasha Howard joined McCowan with a double-double of her own with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Wings have had two players record a double-double in the same game 12 times this season, while no other team has completed the feat more than six times.
Satou Sabally finished with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists. Arike Ogunbowale totaled 14 points, five assists and a team leading four steals. Today represented Ogunbowale’s 16th game this season with four or more assists. Off the bench, Kalani Brown recorded 10 points and four rebounds.
McCowan led Dallas scoring in the first quarter with nine points. In the quarter that was truly Dallas’ downfall, the Wings allowed a season-high 35 points as the Aces shot 13-19 (68.4%) from the field.
Sabally piloted Dallas offense in the second quarter with 10 points on 4-6 shooting. McCowan grabbed five boards in the quarter alongside four points. The Wings held the Aces to only 23 points in the second quarter and held them to 40% from the field.
In the quarter that used to be deemed the Wings’ Achilles heel, Dallas took full advantage of the third quarter, putting a dent in the Las Vegas lead. After trailing by 18 points with just a minute and a half to play in the quarter, the Wings took off on a 10-0 run that allowed them to cut the lead to the smallest it had been since the halfway point in the opening quarter. Ogunbowale totaled eight points in the quarter shooting 2-2 from deep. The Wings 31 points in the third quarter tied their season high for points in the quarter.
Dallas continued their scoring streak into the fourth quarter, where they made consecutive baskets to open and cut the Las Vegas lead to just three points. McCowan finished the game off with eight points on 4-4 shooting in the fourth quarter.
The Aces’ win was fueled by their strength from three, as they finished the night shooting 13-25 (52%) from beyond the arc. Dallas sunk seven from three, an effort Sabally led with three. Both teams’ shots were falling, though, as the Wings shot 36-78 (46.2%) from the field and Vegas shot 32-64 (50%).
Dallas will head to Seattle where they will play the Storm on Wednesday, August 2 at 9pm CT with coverage on Bally Sports Southwest Extra.
