Wings Comeback Falls Short Against Defending Champion Lynx
Minneapolis, MN. – The Wings’ second-half comeback attempt came up short on the road against the Minnesota Lynx, 76-68, despite outscoring the Lynx by 17 points in the second half and 6-foot-8 Australian center Liz Cambage tallying her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The 2017 WNBA Champions marched out to a 13-4 lead early in the game before the Wings battled to within four points following a Skylar Diggins-Smith three-pointer and a Kaela Davis layup. The Lynx dominated the second period defensively, as the Wings managed just four points and were outscored 25-4 in the quarter. Cambage led the way for the Wings with six points and nine rebounds. Sylvia Fowles, the 2017 WNBA Player of the Year, continued right where she left off a season ago as she scored 16 points on 8-for-13 from the field while adding 12 rebounds in the opening half.
The Wings flew out of the locker room and spread the ball around to outscore the Lynx 19-9 in the third quarter and used an 11-2 run to pull to within 15 points, 55-40.
The late comeback attempt from the Wings ran out of time even with outscoring the Lynx 47-30 in the second half, including 28-21 in the fourth quarter. Cambage led the Wings with 14 points, 12 rebounds, a career-high four assists and three blocks. Kayla Thornton recorded her second start of the season and scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
All-Star guard Diggins-Smith added 12 points and tallied a game-high seven assists. Rookie Azurá Stevens led the Wings off the bench with a career-high nine points and four rebounds. The Lynx were led by First Team All-WNBA selection Sylvia Fowles, who poured in 23 points and snatched 20 rebounds to mark the first 20-point, 20-rebound game in Lynx history.
The Wings will travel to Atlanta for game two of their three-game road trip before traveling to New York to close out the trip. The team will return home June 2 to face the Seattle Storm.
