Brooke McCarty-Williams led the charge at the point for the Wings, scoring a team-high 14 points in Arike Ogunbowale’s absence – who was back at Notre Dame attending her graduation – and helped the Dallas bench score a combine 43 points overall in a 71-66 loss to the Indiana fever.
Reserves Kennedy Burke and Theresa Plaisance brought seven points apiece, newcomer Imani McGee-Stafford had six, Azura Stevens tallied five points in her first preseason action and Megan Gustafson recorded four points. Starters Kayla Thornton and Kaela Davis also added seven points.
The Wings got out in front middle way through the first quarter and controlled the game 39-27 going into the locker room at halftime. Dallas would fall victim to an 18-2 Indiana run that would tie the game at 50 all and a Fever three-pointer with 32.8 seconds left in the third quarter would be the go-ahead bucket. Thornton’s breakaway layup started by an Allisha Gray steal would give the Wings its lead back with 2:20 remaining in the game, but back-to-back Dallas turnover provided the Fever with a chance to regain the lead and ultimately take the game.
The Wings travel to Atlanta next for the regular season’s tipoff on Friday, May 24.
