Sabally’s Historic Performance Leads Germany To Olympic Quarterfinal Berth

Arlington, TX (Aug. 1, 2024) – Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally registered the eighth-highest individual scoring performance in Olympic Games history, tallying 33 points to lead Germany to the 75-64 win over Japan on Thursday in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France.

The win bumped Germany, which is competing at the Olympic Games for the first time, to 2-0 in Group C play to clinch a spot in the Quarterfinals in Paris. Spain and Serbia have also already punched their Quarterfinal tickets.

Sabally was 11-of-17 from the field, 3-of-6 from deep and a perfect 8-of-8 from free-throw line against Japan. She added six rebounds, three assists and a steal in 32 minutes.

Sabally’s 33 points are tied for eighth-most in a single game at the Olympics and are the most scored at the Games since Lara Sanders of Türkiye scored 36 against Japan on Aug. 9, 2016. Greece’s Evanthia Maltsi also has a 33-point game to her credit, doing so against Japan on Aug. 22, 2004. Bulgaria’s Evladiya Stefanova holds the Olympic record for points in a game with 39 against Korea on Sept. 25, 1988.

Through two games in France, Sabally is averaging 25.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

Sabally and Team Germany wrap up Group C play on Sunday at 10:15 a.m. CT against the United States. Quarterfinal action tips off in Paris on Wednesday, Aug. 7, with the matchups and game times not yet announced as the field continues to solidify.
