In Review: Wings Overseas

The Dallas Wings had an excellent showing in international play during the offseason, and they look to capitalize on that momentum heading into training camp. As we get closer to starting the 2018 season, here’s a look at how eight of our Wings players succeeded around the globe.

F – Evelyn Akhator – Russia – Dynamo Novosibirsk

Akhator joined team Dynamo Novosibirsk on October 1 and averaged 12.4 points and 8.5 rebounds in 20 games. Overall, she led the team in rebounds per game and finished second in points per game. Akhator totaled a season-high 27 points on October 4 against the Dynamo Moscow. She was named Dallas Wings Overseas Player of the Week on Dec. 13-20 for her outstanding performance on December 17 against Sparta, where she scored 25 points and added 10 rebounds.

G – Saniya Chong – Israel – Elitzur Holon

Chong joined Elitzur Holon on October 16 and opened the season scoring 39 points in 39 minutes against Maccabi R. Hen. She led the team with 4.7 assists per game and was third on the team with 17.7 points per game. She helped lead her team to the semifinals of the Israeli League where she averaged 6.6 points and 5.3 assists in three games. Chong was named to the Eurobasket.com All-Israeli League 3rd Team. She was also named Dallas Wings Overseas Player of the Week five times during the offseason.

G – Kaela Davis – Turkey – Galatasaray

Davis joined Galatasaray with the TKBL league on October 7 and helped lead them to a EuroCup championship on April 19th. This season, she averaged 11.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest in six regular season games. She also averaged 16.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in four games in EuroLeague play.

F – Glory Johnson – China – Guangdong

Johnson joined Guangdong on December 30. In her fifth season overseas, Johnson continued to outperform her opponents. She led the team with in points (19.9) and rebounds (11.9) in 14 contests. She took Guangdong to the semifinals against Shanxi XR where she averaged 18 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games. Johnson was named Dallas Wings Overseas Player of the Week three times during the offseason.

C – Breanna Lewis – Poland – TS Ostrovia

Lewis entered her first year overseas, joining the Polish League on September 23. She led TS Ostrovia in rebounds per game (9.1) and finished second on the team in points per game (15.9). This season, she notched a season-high in both points (30) and rebounds (17) on February 24 against Widzew which earned her both Polish League Player of the Week and Dallas Wings Overseas Player of the Week. Overall, she grabbed 219 rebounds during the season, which was the second highest total in the league.

F – Theresa Plaisance – Poland – CCC Polkowice

Plaisance entered her fifth year playing overseas when she joined CCC Polkowice on September 21. In her short season, she averaged 15 points and 6.5 rebounds in four games. She suffered an ACL injury on October 8 that forced her to miss the rest of the season. She was named Dallas Wings Overseas Player of the Week on Oct. 2-9 for her 25-point, 9-rebound performance on October 2 against Gorzow WLKP, as well as her 20-point, 10-rebound performance against JAS FBG on October 4.

G – Aerial Powers – Turkey – Fenerbahce

Powers began her first full season overseas, joining the TKBL. Powers had a successful season, leading Fenerbahce to the quarterfinals, while averaging 12.4 points and 6.3 rebounds in EuroLeague play. In three quarterfinal games, she averaged 2.6 points and 5.6 rebounds. During regular season play, she averaged 15 points and 6 rebounds in six games. Powers was named Dallas Wings Overseas Player of the Week for her performance on December 20 against Cukurova where she scored 20 points, added 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

F – Kayla Thornton – South Korea – Shin-Han S-Birds

Thornton excelled this offseason and was named Asia-Basket.com All Korean WKBL 1st team, leading the Shin-Han S-Birds to the WKBL Semifinals. In three playoff games, Thornton averaged 9 points and 5.3 rebounds. She finished third in the WKBL in scoring, averaging 17 points per game. She also finished third in the league in steals with 1.8 steals per game. Thornton was named Dallas Wings Overseas Player of the Week a team-high six times during the offseason, one of which was for her season-high 37-point game on November 11 against the KB Stars.

With an already talented roster getting even more talented after the 2018 WNBA Draft, training camp is going to be as competitive as ever before. With the eight players making great strides overseas, and the return of veteran captains Skylar Diggins-Smith and Karima Christmas-Kelly, 2017 Rookie of the Year Allisha Gray and 6-foot-8-inch Center Liz Cambage the Wings have an exciting roster in place. Training camp begins on April 29, with the season tipping off in Phoenix on May 18.
