Arlington, TX – In a duel to the finish the Wings soared high as they defeated the Chicago Sky in a double overtime game, 112-106.
With 3.4 seconds left in the first overtime period, Skylar Diggins-Smith found an open shot to sink the 3-point shot and tie the game to send it to double overtime. It was the first double overtime game for the team, since August 25, 2013.
At the start of the second overtime, Chicago came back to tie the game at 104, but Karima Christmas-Kelly had a different response, when she got the rebound off an attempt by Kayla Thornton, for the lay-up and start the Wings on their 10th win of the season. Diggins-Smith came in with 14.5 seconds to score two good shots from the free throw line to seal the win for the Wings.
After being down by five at the half, the Wings came back strong when Kaela Davis came off the bench and scored 15 points to lift the Wings up. The rookie ended the day with 23 points, a new career high, going 9-for-13 from the field to finish with a .692 percentage, the highest for a Wings player since July 5. The 15 points was also the most she’s scored in a quarter this season.
Diggins-Smith led the day with 26 points scored, shooting perfectly from the line going 9-for-9, for the fourth straight game this season. It also marked as the fourth straight game the she led the team in scoring.
Three other Wings players hit double digits for the afternoon. Christmas-Kelly scored 17 points overall for the day. Glory Johnson recorded 12 points and led the team in total rebounds with nine, while Kayla Thornton scored 11 points.
The Wings hit the road before the WNBA All-Star break to face Minnesota this coming Wednesday, July 18. The team will return home on July 25 as they host the Indiana Fever at College Park Center.
