Diggins-Smith’s Career Day Leads Wings Over Liberty

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. –  Skylar Diggins-Smith led the Wings to a 97-87 victory against the New York Liberty to improve to 10-8 on the season behind her career performance in which she scored 32 points, added seven rebounds and five assists.

Using a 7-2 run to start the game, the Wings took a 30-22 after the first quarter behind Diggins-Smith’s 11 first-quarter points.

The Liberty used a 5-0 run midway through the second quarter to cut the lead to six, but the Wings answered with their own 7-0 run to take a 47-37 lead into the locker room. Diggins-Smith led the way with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Rookie Azurá Stevens added 11 first-half points.

The Wings extended their lead in the third quarter to as many as 20 points before the Liberty closed the gap to 73-60 heading into the final period. Diggins-Smith scored 10 straight points for the Wings in the third to record her 54th career 20-point game, passing Deanna Nolan for the most in franchise history.

The Wings went on to pull away from the Liberty and cruise to a 97-87 victory. Diggins-Smith’s 32-point performance marked the eighth 30-point game of her career, passing Deanna Nolan for the most in franchise history. Liz Cambage recorded her eighth double-double of the season, tallying 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Allisha Gray scored 15 points and recorded a career-high six assists. Stevens led the Wings off the bench with 13 points.

The Liberty were led by Tina Charles, who scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

The Wings return home July 10 for their third and final matchup against the Phoenix Mercury before heading west for a two-game road trip against the Sparks and the Storm.
