Dallas Wings Win Third Straight, Toppling Minnesota Lynx 94-76

Six players score in double figures as Dallas takes down top team in the Western Conference standings.

 

Arlington, Texas (Aug. 30, 2024) – The Dallas Wings earned their third consecutive win on Friday night, taking down the Minnesota Lynx 94-76 at College Park Center. The Wings outscored the Lynx 55-36 in the second half to pull away and defeat the top team in the Western Conference standings. Six Dallas players scored in double figures led by Arike Ogunbowale’s game-high 25 points.

The Wings had one of their finest defensive showings of the season, with the 76 points allowed being the team’s second-fewest of the year, while holding Minnesota (23-9) to its worst shooting performance (.397 FG%) since returning from the Olympic Break. Additionally, Dallas (9-22) forced 16 turnovers which it converted into 25 points, while committing just eight miscues of its own – marking the third time this season the Wings have committed single-digit TOs and the second time in the last three games.

The first half was nearly even, with Dallas taking the first quarter 22-18 before Minnesota won the second frame, 22-17, to hold a narrow 40-39 lead at the break. The Wings shot 40-percent in the first half and limited the Lynx to a 39-percent clip, but Minnesota drained five threes to gain the advantage. Ogunbowale, Natasha Howard and Satou Sabally all entered the locker room with 10 points apiece.

Dallas opened the third quarter on a 10-4 run to take a five-point lead, 49-44, just three minutes into the frame, forcing Minnesota to burn a timeout. The Wings responded with a 10-3 run out of the timeout as their advantage grew to double digits, 59-47, with under four minutes left in the quarter.

Minnesota would get no closer than seven the rest of the way, and no closer than nine in the fourth quarter, as the Wings kept their foot on the gas. The Lynx were limited to just three points over the first three minutes of the final quarter, as Dallas’ advantage swelled to 17 at the 7:19 mark. The Wings would lead by as many as 20 before concluding with the 18-point advantage, 94-76, marking Dallas’ largest margin of victory of the season.

Joining Ogunbowale in double figures: Sabally (18 points, eight rebounds, six assists, two steals), Howard (17 points, five rebounds, three steals), Teaira McCowan (11 points, game-high 11 rebounds), Kalani Brown (10 points, three rebounds, three assists, two blocks) and Sevgi Uzun (11 points, four rebounds, two assists, career-high four steals). It marked the second time this season Dallas had six score in double figures and first since the July 17 win over Indiana.

The Wings’ three-game winning streak is their first since Aug. 12-20, 2023, after wins over Los Angeles Sunday and reigning WNBA Champion Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday. Dallas matched its season high with 40 made field goals and recorded 20+ assists for the 16th time this season (21) and fourth time in the last five games. Dallas improved to 6-0 when committing fewer turnovers than its opponent. The Wings also finished with notable advantages in points in the paint (50-20), second-chance points (14-7) and fast break points (15-6).

On the night, Dallas shot .482 from the field, .389 from three and .636 from the free-throw line, compared to Minnesota at .397, .286 and .923, respectively.

Dallas evened the season series with Minnesota with the win, 2-2, with each team defending their home court. Tonight’s contest featured six ties and eight lead changes.

Napheesa Collier led four Minnesota players in double figures with 17 points while also corralling a team-best 10 rebounds.

The Wings will eye win No. 4 in a row on Sunday when they host the Indiana Fever (16-16) at 3 p.m. CT. The game will air on NBA TV and Bally Sports Southwest Extra, while streaming on WNBA League Pass.
