Wings Begin Road Trip With Loss to Sparks

LOS ANGELES, CA. –  The Wings drop to 6-7 on the season with an 87-83 loss on the road to the Los Angeles Sparks, despite Liz Cambage recording her fourth 25-point game of the season.

The Wings grabbed an early 10-2 lead behind five points from rookie Azurá Stevens, but the Sparks fought back to tie the game at 17 late in the opening quarter. The Wings extended out to a 21-18 lead after the first with Kayla Thornton leading the way with eight points.

The Sparks took the lead in the second quarter, but the Wings rallied with a Glory Johnson old fashioned three-point play to regain the lead. The Wings built on their lead to take a 46-42 advantage into the locker room. Stevens, who earned her third consecutive start, led the Wings in the first half with 11 points and five rebounds. Cambage and Skylar Diggins-Smith each added nine first-half points.

After the break, the Sparks grabbed the lead midway through the third quarter. But the Wings countered with a 10-0 run to go up 68-64 heading into the final period.

The Wings were held without a field goal for over six minutes to start the fourth quarter, but a Thornton three-pointer brought the Wings within two late in the game. The Wings couldn’t regain the lead and the Sparks took an 87-83 victory. The Wings were led by Cambage who scored 25 points and added 14 rebounds – her fifth double-double of the season. Thornton tallied a career-high 16 points on 7-for-11 from the field, while adding six rebounds. Diggins-Smith finished with 12 points and five assists.

The Sparks were led by Candace Parker, who scored a season-high 29 points on 10-for-17 from the field. Parker also added seven assists and five rebounds.

The Wings will close out their west coast road trip in Las Vegas against the Aces on June 27 before coming home for a three-game homestand beginning with the Minnesota Lynx on July 1.
