Arlington, TX– Skylar Diggins-Smith recorded her fourth 20-point game of the season with 21 scored, to give the Wings their ninth win of the season over the Atlanta Dream 94-84.
Diggins-Smith ended the night shooting over 40% from the field, going 8-for-8 from the line to record her fourth 20-point game of the season.
At the start of the contest, the Wings came out strong to end the first quarter with a 31-23 score. The 31 points marked as the most scored in the first for the team this season. Diggins-Smith led the way with eight points, as the Wings continued their lead into the second quarter.
At the half, the Wings took a commanding 16-point lead to keep the Dream at bay and take command of the game. Theresa Plaisance, Allisha Gray and Diggins-Smith combined for a total of 17 points in the second quarter while Glory Johnson and Evelyn Akhator combined for four to give the Wings a total of 21 points scored and the 16-point edge.
Walking into the third quarter, the Wings remained strong, scoring 18 points for a 12-point lead. It wasn’t until the final quarter that the Dream tried to come close to the Wings to pull within four, but Allisha Gray had a different response for them. The rookie hit a three-point shot and was fouled to complete a four-point play for the Wings, for the first time this season. With the play, the Wings took a seven-point lead, which allowed Diggins-Smith to seal the game when she was called to the line with 21 seconds left to score her 20th and 21st point.
The Wings will hit the road for the next two games. They will travel to Atlanta to face the Dream again this Sunday for a 2pm contest, before heading to Chicago to go up against the Sky for the first time this season on July 12. The team returns to College Park Center on July 16, when they host the Chicago Sky. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
