Phillips Headed to Rio Olympics; Sims and Powers Named to Select Team

July 11, 2016-Dallas Wings guard Erin Phillips has been selected to the Australian Women’s Olympic basketball team to compete for gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics and Odyssey Sims and Aerial Powers have been named to the 11-member USA Basketball Women’s Select Team.

The 2016 Rio Olympics is Phillips’ second Olympics with the Australian national team. The Melbourne, Australia, native led the 2008 national team to bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Phillips and the Australian national team, will play their first match against Brazil on Day 1 of the Games (August 6). They then take on Turkey on Day 2 (August 7), France on Day 4 (August 9), Japan on Day 6 (August 11) before rounding out the group stage against Belarus on Day 8 (August 13). They will need to finish in the top four in the group to progress in the quarter-finals.

Sims and Powers join the USA Select Team who are comprised of young USA National Team members and future USA National Team hopefuls who will train alongside the 2016 USA Women’s National Team July 23-24 in Los Angeles before tipping-off the USA Basketball Showcase presented by Verizon in an exhibition game July 25 at the University of Southern California’s Galen Center.

The USA Select Team is scheduled to practice July 23 at 3:30 p.m. (PDT) at a site to be determined, hold a second practice July 24 at 10 a.m. (PDT) at USC’s Galen Center before tipping-off July 25 at 7 p.m. (PDT) against the USA National Team at the Galen Center.
