The Wings return from a month-long Olympic break with a matchup against 2016 Olympians Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor, and the Phoenix Mercury.

The Wings are currently on the outside of the playoffs looking in, trailing the seventh-place Mercury by one and a half games and two spots in the standings. With nine games remaining in the regular season, only the Los Angeles Sparks and Minnesota Lynx have clinched a playoff spot, while no team has been eliminated from playoff contention.

This is the final of four games between the Wings and Mercury in the regular season. Dallas has won all three games, including two wins at home and a triple-overtime victory at Phoenix.

The Wings have provided a few memorable moments vs. the Mercury this season. Guard Odyssey Sims scored 10 points in the third overtime and Skylar Diggins led the Wings with 27 in the 117-111 triple-OT win at Phoenix on June 18. Three weeks later at home on July 5, forward Glory Johnson scored 23 points and grabbed 22 rebounds for the 15th ’20-20’ game in WNBA history.

Injury Update: Glory Johnson is clear to play, after fracturing her right toe against Atlanta, July 8.

What the Wings are saying…

Head Coach Fred Williams- “Both teams have had plenty of time to make some adjustments. What we are preparing for is a lot of transition offense from Phoenix. They get the ball up and down the floor. For us, we have to play solid defense on the back side. We’ll need a lot of helping on their bigs.”

Assistant coach Ed Baldwin- “We’re preparing against three Olympians (Mercury guard Diana Taurasi and center Brittney Griner from Team USA, and forward Penny Taylor from Australia). Hopefully, that experience left them a little bit tired. We’ll go in with the same preparation. We’ve got to be able to control Griner. We have to really prepare for (Mercury guard) DeWanna Bonner. We’ve beaten them three times so we feel pretty confident. Hopefully, this is one plus the hat trick.”

Guard Tiffany Bias- “We’re focusing on us. If we play our game then we are unstoppable. The Wings have beat them three times, so it’s just being disciplined and following what coach wants us to do.”
