Arlington, TX –The Dallas Wings announced today the team has signed guard Maggie Lucas for the remainder of the 2018 season.
The Wings petitioned the League for a medical hardship roster exemption on Saturday. When granted, the exemption allowed the team to add Lucas.
“The loss of Karima Christmas-Kelly for the season, along with Kaela Davis’ diagnosis of vertigo has left us shorthanded,” Wings President and CEO Greg Bibb stated. “We are fortunate to be able to add a player like Maggie, who has WNBA experience and maintains an extraordinary fitness level, which will allow her to step in immediately if needed.”
Lucas was a 2014 second-round draft pick (21st overall) of the Phoenix Mercury, but acquired by the Indiana Fever during training camp, just prior to the start of the 2014 season.
At Indiana Lucas played a total of 64 games in three seasons (2014-16), averaging 5.8 points and 0.8 assists per game while logging 12.8 minutes per contest. The Philadelphia, PA native brings playoff experience to the Wings roster, having appeared in both the 2014 and 2015 WNBA Playoffs while a member of the Fever.
Lucas most recently played seven games this season with the Atlanta Dream, averaging five minutes per outing.
The 5-9 guard out of Penn State, was a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year who scored 2,510 career points, good enough for second in school history and fourth in conference history. She averaged 21.0 points per game as a senior, finishing her career with a Big Ten and Penn State-record of 365 3-pointers, 12th in NCAA history.
Lucas was a member of the McDonald’s and Parade Magazine High School All-America teams in 2010 when she averaged 23.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.8 steals per game as she led her hometown Germantown Academy to its second-straight Independent Schools State title and its 12th consecutive league crown. She finished her career with 2,197 points, the second-highest total in Germantown Academy history (boys or girls).
Lucas will join the Wings this afternoon as the team prepares to complete its 2018 campaign in Seattle and prepare for the first round of the WNBA playoffs.
