ARLINGTON, TX – The Dallas Wings began preparations for the 2017 season during an open practice session in day one of training camp.
The team opened their first day of camp to the general public so that fans can get a first look of this year’s squad and training camp invitees.
Fans sat and cheered on the team as they watched rookies and veterans gel during a two-hour practice session. During that time, the squad showed those attending special drills, game-like strategies, and coach breakouts.
“I think we’ve got a good balance of players,” stated Head Coach Fred Williams. “My goal this week is to give everyone some minutes to make a good evaluation. The main thing for us is to have that team chemistry and to continue to build on it.”
This year’s camp consists of nine returning players, five standout draft picks and three camp invitees. The team will run camp for the next two weeks, with two preseason games scheduled during their workouts.
“Today was a great session for me,” stated Rookie Forward Evelyn Akhator. “It was great seeing the fans here to cheer us on and see how we will look this season. I’m excited to be here and looking forward to a great training camp.”
On May 6, the Wings will host the Indiana Fever in preseason play. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside College Park Center on the campus of The University of Texas at Arlington.
The Wings will finalize their roster to 12 players on May 12, prior to opening the regular season against the Mercury on May 14 in Phoenix. The team will open at home on May 20 and face the Minnesota Lynx. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. To purchase tickets call 817.469.9464 or visit dallaswings.com.
